The University of North Dakota, Grand Forks has an 8′ diameter x 15′ long deaerator tank at their steam plant that needed to be lined. The existing lining was deteriorated.
Because of the quality of a previous job for sandblasting and painting a water tank on campus, the University was comfortable having TMI work on the lining of their steam tank.
TMI sandblasted the interior of the steam tank to a SSPC-SP5 White Metal Blast. Sand from the blasting was removed from the tank and taken out of the plant. It was critical that an anchor pattern of 2.5 mils was acheived to ensure adhesion of the new coating. The TMI crew had to be consistent and thorough to create the correct anchor pattern for the entire interior of the tank. TMI then applied an epoxy phenolic coating suitable for immersion service with temperatures reaching up to 230 degrees F. Two coats of the material were applied and the tank was force-cured as recommended by the manufacturer.
After the tank lining was completed, the Steam Plant Operator was pleased with the lining in the tank. He commented that the TMI crew was very professional, worked hard and completed the task in a timely manner. The lining of the tank was not a disruption to the operation of the UND Steam Plant.
