A shipbuilder in Superior, WI recently had a project where the insulation in the mechanical room below deck had moisture and condensation problems. While remodeling other parts of the ship, the owner found out they needed to remove the insulation and apply a product to prevent condensation and other moisture problems.

Once the insulation was removed, TMI Coatings, a commercial contractor, mechanically abraded the walls and the ceiling prior to applying a ceramic insulation to the ceiling and walls to prevent future moisture problems. TMI had to complete work in a tight time frame, as the builder had only 45 days from the time of dry dock to putting the vessel back into the water.

A NACE certified coating inspector was on site for the entire job to monitor surface preparation and coating by TMI Coatings crew. The photos show white primer on ship walls where rust was evident and aluminum foil and/or poly covering to protect piping and equipment in the area. TMI was able to finish applying the ceramic insulation in a timely manner, working around the other tradesmen that were also completing projects during the 45 day dry dock period.

TMI received an excellent report card from the owner for both meeting their schedule and quality workmanship in a small, congested area.

A large food plant near Minneapolis, Minnesota requested a coating be applied to the Meat Test Lab and the Fruit Room ceilings. In the Meat Test Lab, the ceilings, I-beams, sprinkler piping and condenser pans were properly cleaned and prepared for the adhesion of the new coating. The owner selected a food grade elastomer coating for durability and longevity.

The ceiling in the Fruit Room was power tool cleaned to remove rust and primed with epoxy prior to coating. The ceiling area included the duct work, cross beams, boxes, hangers and conduit. The owner selected a food grade reinforced coating for the steel members to reduce corrosion; FIBERLIFE a fiberglass reinforced plastic consisting of a food grade resin and fiberglass mat reinforcement was hand laid up. The result of both rooms was a food grade protective coating that will not chip, peel or flake for many years to come.

This spring, TMI Coatings did a job for one of the world’s largest privately held milling companies in the world. This project done in Houston, Texas is to clean and paint seven stories of a mill stairwell including the ceilings, walls and steps.

TMI began by cleaning all surfaces to prepare for the new paint coating adhesion. All bare steel was primed and two coats paint coating was applied to all the concrete and metal surfaces. This included painting walls and doors, diamond plate floor, landings, staircases and the underside of the cases.

The result is a clean, bright stairwell with no corrosion or loose and flaking paint. Sandy the plant manager said, “It is looking very nice!”

For a printed circuit company in St. Paul, Minnesota TMI removed loose and flaking paint on their bar joist ceiling. The flaking paint was falling into their open top tanks. After meeting with the owner it was determined that using dry ice to blast the ceiling to remove all the loose and flaking paint was the best surface preparation method. From experience, pressure washing interfered with electrical components. Sandblasting may result in fine dust residue causing problems with their instruments. Hand and power tool cleaning wasn’t effective for long term new paint coating adhesion.

An epoxy primer compatible with the existing dry fall paint which remained on the ceiling was applied as a tie coat prior to application of the polyurethane finish coat.

The result is a clean, bright, white ceiling with no corrosion or loose and flaking paint. The customer said “The ceiling looks great. TMI’s crew really did a great job completing the room in the time allowed.”

A food manufacturer in Minnesota recently hired TMI Coatings to remove the existing paint from the ceiling of their plant. They wanted to remove the existing paint, which was chipping, peeling and flaking. The first step was to protect the sensitive equipment, including fragile gauges and electronic control panel boxes. The team used CO2 to blast the ceiling using dry ice particles, an air compressor and a dry ice machine.

CO2 blasting is often used to remove loose and flaking paint or simply to clean a substrate without damage to delicate parts such as gauges, control panel boxes, or lights. With CO2 blasting, there is no need to use additional chemicals for the cleaning. Dry ice blasting is safe and adds no moisture/water to the area being prepared. For this project, the clean up consisted of paint chips only. The dry ice evaporated and the chips, dirt and grime came off in a powder form, allowing for quick cleanup. There is almost no secondary waste to clean up and dispose of when CO2 blasting.

In another area of the plant, the TMI team applied a unique food grade approved elastomer coating to encapsulate the existing flaking paint and to provide a more sanitary food preparation area.

TMI Coatings received a contract to remove all the loose and flaking paint and encapsulate the remaining existing lead based paint on block walls and a wooden ceiling inside of a food plant. Our crews receive specific training for lead removal and abatement. We submitted a site specific lead plan to the owner’s representative before beginning the project.

To collect all hazardous chips and ensure that any lead dust would not escape from the room where the crew was working TMI hung poly over doors and around the perimeter of the work area and installed ground cover. Then we prepared surfaces using grinders with proper vacuum attachments. The project team collected all chips, vacuumed all dust and disposed of all debris daily.

Below are pictures taken while at the site showing a portion of the wall and ceiling prior to work beginning and at the completion of the project.

This project was scheduled during a critical plant shutdown and completed on time. The customer was very happy with TMI’s workmanship and safety.

Is peeling or flaking paint an issue at your plant? Do you have wet environments where areas have been painted and repainted and the paint will not adhere? A Wisconsin food processing plant has been dealing with these issues and wanted a solution to their ever present peeling paint problems.

You may be familiar with applying FIBERLIFE coatings to concrete walls, but the TMI FIBERLIFE product is also a feasible solution for steel food plant equipment and steel columns. TMI FIBERLIFE, which is a fiberglass coating with an epoxy resin, can withstand constant wash downs in a wet and humid environment.

TMI Coatings pressure washed and prepared numerous columns and structural steel beams to remove loose and flaking paint. We then applied TMI FIBERLIFE to the columns, I-beams and structural steel. Now, the food processing facility will not have to deal with peeling and flaking paint and having to repaint this equipment on a yearly basis.

TMI FIBERLIFE is a low odor, fiberglass-reinforced coating that protects ceilings and walls against acids and alkalis. The coating provides a seamless surface for easy cleaning and is ideal for use in food and beverage plants where peeling paint cannot be tolerated. TMI FIBERLIFE meets USDA requirements for use in federally inspected meat and poultry plants.

Because of the fiberglass reinforcement, TMI FIBERLIFE is tough and durable; yet, it still works well in light industrial situations. The coating can be applied by spraying, or laid up by hand.
